Giant millipedes invade community in W/R

GHANA - A community of about 1000 residents in the Prestea Huni Valley District has been taken over by strange millipede-like creatures.

The giant reddish creatures have perennially been paying discomforting visits to the residents of Tebe for about five years now.

Joy FM’s Western Region correspondent Kwaku Owusu Peprah who has visited the community said the millipedes resurfaced between January and April every year.

“Some residents are attributing it to some spiritual curses that may be a deity in the area has put a spell on the area bringing these millipedes,” Owusu-Peprah gathered.

He said the district assembly with the support of some mining companies does organize a spraying exercise every year to get rid of them.

He was told that after spraying, the millipedes, that like moisture, enter the soil and destroy crops, especially root crops.

Unlike previous encounters, he said, the creatures have taken their disturbance a notch up: attacking and biting human beings. The niece of the chief of the community who was bitten by the creatures had developed serious skin rashes.

Meanwhile, the Crop Research Department from Kumasi has visited the area and taken some of the species for lab test.
